The Farmers' Market is closed till next April. We will reopen on April 21, 2012 with a temporary change of hours from 12 noon till 4pm. A tractor parade will kickoff the season at 10am on Main Street from Queen's Plaza to Amvets. After the parade on April 21st, the Market will open and will be selling bedding plants only. We will also be open on April 28th from 12 noon till 4pm for bedding plant sales.

Our grand opening for the season will be May 5, 2012, the first Saturday in May, where we will host, "Meet Me at the Market".

Put April 21st on your calender and come and buy your flower and vegtable plants from our local vendors.

WHAT'S AT THE MARKET FOR OUR AUTUMN FEST OCTOBER 22ND

Our last week for the Farmers' Market for 2011 is shaping up to be a grand finale! We have about 20 vendors of all kinds and there are 2 contests you can enter. The Decorated Pumpkin Contest and the Apple Pie Contest. Please look at the rules following for these contests.

It may be fall, but there is still great PRODUCE at the Market to be had along with lots of farm-raised PUMPKINS. Fresh lettuce, squash, peppers of all kinds, potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli and more. In addition, our Vendors have fresh baked breads, carmel apples, fudge, cookies, apple butter, pear butter, and honey. Also, don't forget where to find the BEEF. Pastured raised, Angus beef, fresh frozen, ready for your enjoyment at the Market.

We also will have kid's goat cart rides offered by Karen's Caprine Farm Fashions and live Alpacas to show the kids. Live music from 9:00-11:30am from our local musicians and some of the Jefferson County Youth Choir will join us.

A cooking demonstration will be held by Chef Kevin Smith at 9:00am & 10:00am. Coffee and muffins will be available for you along with other goodies from other Vendors for breakfast or brunch.

Market Community Committee Meeting Sept 14th

Our monthly Community Committee Meeting will be this Wednesday, September 14th at 5pm at City Hall in De Soto. The meeting is open to the public and vendors. Please consider being part of the planning for the Market. We need your input.

CELEBRATE YOUR HERITAGE DAY AT THE MARKET SEPT 10TH

Please join us for this great event at the Market. There are all kinds of things going on that you won't want to miss. The Market itself will be up and running with all our wonderful local Vendors with their Produce, Baked Goods, Eggs, Jam & Jellies, Hand-crafted items and more. The Market also offers Fresh Pastured-Raised Angus Beef & Fresh Pastured-Raised Chicken, all USDA inspected. Don't forget everything the Market offers is locally raised, produced or hand-crafted and not resold.

Also featured this day is local artisans who will be demonstrating such crafts as, basket weaving, story telling, broom making, soap making, weaving from a loom, spinning, blacksmithing and more. We have a Civil War re-enactment also planned during the day.

Maxine Jinkerson on the hammered dulcimer will round out the morning with live music.

SARE Farmer/Rancher Grants Webinar

The SARE Farmer/Rancher Grant call for proposals will be coming out later in August. I will announce and post when it is out. In the meantime, I am hosting 3 webinars to help producers understand the SARE Farmer/Rancher grant, the grant writing process, what makes a good proposal and answer questions you may have.

Each year there are minor changes for the grant and that is the case for this year. Funding for the grants have increased!

One producer – up to $7,500

Two producers – up to $14,000

Three or more producers – up to $22,500

What's happening at the Market this week

Hello Community and Vendors,

We had a wonderful day for the Market this past Saturday. The weather was beautiful and our Vendors had great items, from their fresh, home grown produce, the beautifully hand-crafted jewelry, delicious homemade breads, pies, muffins, etc. and the hand-crafted wooden items.

Not to mention, the farm-fresh, locally pastured raised CHICKEN that is now available. Mine was absolutely delicious roasted in the oven.

This coming week we will offer more of the same great items. We are also excited to be able to offer for the first time, ANGUS BEEF. It is locally pastured raised, farm fresh, Angus beef and all cuts will be available from steak to hamburg and everything between.

All the chicken and beef offered is USDA inspected, freshly packaged and frozen, ready for you to enjoy.

Keep in mind September 10th. We will be hosting "Celebrate Your Heritage" at the Market. We have several things going on for your enjoyment. How about a Civil War reenactment for one. We will also have crafters demonstrating their skills the way things use to be done. More information to come soon.

Also, the 1st and 3rd week the Market will offer a raffle of a lovely hand-woven basket made by our local artist, Marsha Foster, of Frog's Hair Baskets overflowing with products from the Market donated by our faithful Vendors. We also have newly designed T-Shirts, great tote bags, coffee cups with free refills on the 1st and 4th week of the month, our brand new cookbooks filled with recipes from our Vendors and local cooks. Come check us out at the "Market Barn". You can't miss it!

This week the men of St. Andrew's UMC will offer breakfast from 7am to 11:00am or until it lasts. You can get a full meal deal or a simple and delicious breakfast sandwich.

Don't forget we have our live music each week for you to enjoy! So pull up a chair and stay awhile and let the kids do their thing at the Kid's Korner from 9-11am.

TOMATO FEST THIS SATURDAY, JULY 30th

The 3rd Annual Tomato Fest will be held this Saturday at the Farmers' Market from 8am till 12:00 Noon. We have lots of activities planned for the whole family on top of all the fresh produce, handmade, hand-crafted items. St. Andrew's will be serving a community breakfast from 7am till 11am and lots of homemade baked goods will be available at the Market. We also have coffee and water for sale to go along with your goodies.

A special hand-crafted market basket, called "Too Hot to Market" made by Marsha Foster of Frog's Hair Baskets will be given away in the Market Raffle which will include an assortment of our Vendor goodies. Tickets may be purchased at the Market Barn for $1.00 or 6 for $5.00.

Our kid friendly activities include making "Tomato Puppets" at the Kid's Corner, Parachute fun provided by the 4-H Club, Basketball Shoot provided by the National Guard and GOAT Cart Rides will be available from Karen's Caprine Farm Fashion for $2.00 and pictures with the goats for $3.00.

MBFP Webinar - Tonight - Farmers' Markets The Missouri Beginning Farmers Program will continue its monthly webinars in July with a presentation by Andy Larsen, "Farmers' Market Vendors: The Pro's and Con's". The webinar will be Monday July 11th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm with a PowerPoint presentation. There will be two additional opportunities to learn about how to be a great vendor at a farmers' market. TOMATO FEST-UPCOMING EVENT JULY 30TH

July 30th will be our 3rd Annual Tomato Fest at the Market. We have all kinds of contests and events that involve the all american red, yellow, or green tomato. The contests include:

A cooking contest for either a Tomato Pie or Tomato Soup. (Rules to be posted by July 15th)

Count the tomatoes contest. (How many tomatoes are in our container?)

Tomato contest for the smallest, largest, most unique and best decorated.

Jenifer Brooks from the Department of Agriculture will pay us a visit at the Market. Come out and visit her booth and learn about the 10,000 garden challenge that you can be a part of.

The Market Raffle will include a beautiful market basket created by Marsha Foster of Frogs' Hair Baskets. Tickets $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. The basket will include several wares from our Vendors.

Marsha Foster, a basket weaver and weaving teacher, has turned her hobby into an opportunity to raise money for local charities. Marsha makes all types of baskets – reed, waxed linen, ash, oak (depending on availability)-as well as furniture. Marsha’s father was a weaver and while he did not teach her to weave, she does use his tools when weaving.

Shoeman Water Projects-OLD SHOES NEEDED June 18th

Do you have old shoes just sitting around? Put them to good use by bringing them to the Market on June 18th form 8:00am to 12 Noon. The shoes are being collected for "Shoeman Water Projects" turning used shoes into water. The shoes that are donated are recycled and sold. The money is used to purchase well drilling rigs, water filtration systems, and other supplies to bring clean, fresh water to those in need.

INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES FOR THE MARKET

We have made a change on the procedure for "bad weather" because we want our Vendors to have every opportunity to share their products and at the same time be safe. Our procedure is:

If the weather is bad, we may have a rain delay until the storm passes but we will not cancel the Market before 8am. We are opting to wait out the storm. Vendors are welcome to wait in the church until the storm passes. If the storm does not pass and is not predicted to pass or if it is lightning, we will cancel at that time. If a vendor decides not to come because of the weather, they must notify the Market Master, Cindy Valle, but will not be charged for that week.

Vendors are welcomed to call Cindy if there is a question about the weather conditions.

Week are looking for a BIG, BEAUTIFUL DAY at the Market Saturday. We hope you will join us for lots to do and lots to buy. From fresh produce, fresh baked goods, plants of all kinds, cedar furniture, dry food mixes, woven articles from Alpaca fur, handcrafted jewelry and wooden crafts. The Bug Doctor will be with us this week also.

Our produce includes lettuce, onions, asparagus, radishes, kale, broccoli, beets, sugar snap peas, new potatoes, summer squash, strawberries and possibly spinach and cauliflower. Wow, and we are just at the beginning of the produce season! So come out and come early to find your favorite produce but stay for the LIVE MUSIC and fun.

Just plan on eating breakfast or lunch with us as there will be fresh baked goods and coffee available. From 11 to 1 St. Andrew's Church will offer a lunch plate that includes a brat, potato salad, baked beans, chips and dessert for $6.00. This Saturday will start our 3rd year of the De Soto Farmer's Market. We have 20 vendors coming with an array of goods. It's early in the season for some produce, but vendors will be bringing fresh Butter Crunch Lettuce, Romaine Lettuce, New Potatoes, Beets, Broccoli, Red Russian Kale, Dwarf Blue Kale and Asparagus. On top of that, there is a possibility of Fresh Strawberries.

Other vendors include homemade baked goods, delicious dry mixes, cut flowers, lots of plants for your garden or flower beds, fresh eggs, cedar furniture, wooden crafts, jewelry, handmade soap, items made from Alpaca yarn. Yes, Alpaca. Those little furry friends with be with us, live, along with goats and rabbits. So bring the kids out for a morning of fun. Saturday's Meet Me at the Market

This Saturday is the grand opening of the market for the 2011 season. We will have some plants, produce, and baked goods for sale but more about that later. (Vendors don't have to be on the list for Saturday until Friday, so we'll post a list of vendors and their goods later this week.) There are lots of things going on in addition to the sell of products you've come to expect.

There will be live music from 9-11:30 AM, and we'll have some tables and umbrellas set up if you'd like to sit and listen. There will be kids' activities throughout the morning, and I'm not quite certain what Karen has planned, but the kids will no doubt enjoy it. Mr. Wiley will also be present with an antique tractor, and Leo Hancock will be present with Hit & Miss Engines.

Don't forget that we now accept EBT and debit, so if you don't have cash, head to the market master booth. If you can't find it, look for someone in a green apron to point you in the right direction.

The market has a lot of great sponsors this year, so be sure to check out the list on the Sponsorship Information tab at the top.

Reminder for Vendors

If you would like to be a Vendor at the De Soto Farmers' Market during the 2011 season, you must have a current application on file...nope, the one from last year won't work. We need a brand spanking new one (available by emailing us at buyfreshlocal@gmail.com or by looking under the "Vendor Information" tab at the top of the page). We also need a copy of proof of insurance for the vehicle you will be bringing to the market.

Now, having this documentation in our files is great, but you'll need to let Cindy, Market Master, know which weeks you want to attend. You must contact her by noon the Friday before the date you would like to attend. You'll get a confirmation number to verify your registration, and Cindy will probably ask you what items you'll be bringing. (It's hard to put information about products we'll have at the market if no one share that information to be put on the blog.)

(We still have the restriction of a maximum of 5 artisans per Saturday, so artisans need to try to register as far in advance as possible to ensure a spot.)

On the Saturdays that you vend at the market, you must be set up and ready to go by 7:45 AM. What this means is that you need to have prices clearly marked and your vehicle needs to be moved off the lot (unless you're selling from the back of your vehicle; discuss this with Cindy as soon as you arrive because it isn't always an option).

"But, how," you may ask, "am I to know what prices to set if the vendor two stalls down is also selling tomatoes? I'll never be able to get mine sold if hers are cheaper." This is where being chatty is really helpful. Talk to each other about what you're considering for prices...BEFORE the market opens. It isn't a fail proof method of ensuring that everyones tomatoes sell, but it certainly helps. Cindy will also encourage that you do this when she gathers you up for any announcements before the market opens. Of course, it always helps to arrive early and get these things sorted out, and someone is usually there by 6:30 AM.

PLANT SALE THIS WEEKEND!

The Market will host it's first annual Plant Sale this Saturday, April 23rd and next Saturday, April 30th. The Market will only include vendors with plants and maybe some fresh eggs thrown in there just in time for your Easter baskets. We'll be in our normal location behind St. Andrew's UMC at 1004 Rock Rd in De Soto from 8am to 12 Noon. We have 10 vendors who will be there with a variety of plants. The vendors include, Rustic Valley Nursery LLC, Moder Valley Nursery, Matheny Farm, Carters Produce and several local producers. We hope you can join us on these pre-opening days to buy your plants for your vegetable and flower gardens!

Cookbooks!

The cookbooks will be available at the Dinner and a Show this Friday night. The proof looks lovely, and we've been assured that the printing will be complete in time for the show.

The cookbooks will be on sale for $12 on Friday, but we only have about 50 of them. The rest will be printed and shipped later. We expect them to go like hotcakes, so try to nab one.

If you haven't purchased tickets for the Dinner and a Show, you can still purchase them at the door. The cost is $25 and the event starts at 6:30 PM. I know there are several items to be auctioned off (and I'll be just heart broken if the truffles I made to accompany some wine and a lovely basket don't go for top dollar!).

Dinner and a Show

In order to raise a little money for the music that we have at the market each week, we are having a fundraiser on April 15, 2011 at Ball Creek Bowl in De Soto. The Dinner and a Show will include a lovely meal and music by various farmers' market musicians. In addition to the great music, there will also be a silent auction. Vendor Information Meeting

Growing and Marketing Flowers

On March 1st, Karen Davis will present the third session in this year's series of workshops. The workshop will begin at 6:30 PM at St. Andrew's UMC and will focus on growing flowers for sale at farmers' markets. Karen Davis is a Horticulture Specialist with Lincoln University Extension, and she once owned her own flower business and supplied flowers to multiple florists, as well as selling them at the Boone County Farmers Market.

The worksop is free and open to everyone. No registration is required, so we hope that you'll join us.

Social Event of the Year

The Jefferson County Soils and Crops Conference will be held on Saturday, March 26th. It's the 87th time for the event, so that means if you haven't made it in the past, you've missed the Jefferson County Social Event of the Year 86 times! How you've managed to survive without your annual dosage of "Farm Family of the Year" presentations, 4-H auctions, and great exhibits is unknown to me, but it's high time you get into the spirit of Soils and Crops and join us. The event will be held at Hillsboro High School, and there's dinner and presentations and exhibits throughout the evening. Vendor Information Meeting

The Vendor Information Meeting for potential vendors at the market will be Tuesday, March 29th at 6:30 PM. It will be held at St. Andrew's UMC, and it is an opportunity for vendors and potential vendors to get a copy of the new rules and ask questions about the market. Dean Wilson will be available from the University of Missouri Extension to answer questions, as will someone from the Jefferson County Health Department. Informaiton packets will be available and all potential vendors are encouraged to attend. If you can't make it to the meeting, we won't take your birthday away (even if you're past the point of wanting to claim any birthdays). However, we want to convey the information as consistently as possible, so please attend if you can. If you are unavailable on the 29th, information can be sent via email or mail. De Soto Farmers' Market Plant Sale Dates

The 2011 market season will open on May 7th, but there are special dates set aside for a plant sale prior to the grand opening. On Saturday, April 23rd and 30th, there will be a plant sale at the market. Although there won't be any artisans, we hope to have several vendors with bedding plants to get your garden and flower beds growing. We still have to work out details with vendors, but stay tuned for a preview of what will be available on these dates.

In case you missed it in the Leader this past week, the farmers' market and University of Missouri Extension will be hosting another free workshop for anyone interested in...dirt! The workshop will be facilitated by Scott Killpack and will begin at 6:30 PM. The workshop will take place at St. Andrew's UMC at 1004 Rock Rd. in De Soto. Registration isn't necessary, but you might try to arrive early if you want a good seat.

The workshop will focus on increasing the productivity of your soil, whether you focus on flowers, vegetables, or grasses. The workshop is open to all. We'll see you there!

Dates for 2011 Market Season

Yes, we've already set dates for the 2011 season! Get your seed catalogs ready and call your small engine repair guy about your tiller issues because I'm certain many of you are already ~~scheming~~ planning for next year.
Holidays when the market will be closed in 2011: May 28th, July 2nd, and September 3rd. The committee went over this fore a while. We know that many of you have family visiting for holidays, and you would love to show them our wonderful market. However, the market season is long, and in an effort to not overwork our vendors, we decided to continue with last year's policy of closing for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Opening Day: May 7th! It's the day before Mother's Day, so mark your calendars.
Closing Day: October 22nd!
Plant Sale: We know that many of our vendors have bedding plants, so this year we'll have special dates for plant sales in April. Right now, we're planning on April 23rd and April 30th. We'll get details about those in a couple of weeks, but we've had a lot of requests for opening in April. We were a little hesitant since our season is so long already, but we're looking to do something dfferent with these special days in April. There is a requirement to have 8 vendors committed for each of these dates, so if you have plants that you want to sell, be sure to talk to your network of other growers about selling at the market in April.
Roving Market Days: We will probably have a couple of dates when we set up the market somewhere else. We'd like to do this in cooperation with some of the festivals in DeSoto and work with the city and Chamber of Commerce. We're thinking that May 14th might be on Main St. and September 17th in Walther's Park, but we'll be sure to get more details as plans are finalized.

Acidified Food Workshop

Acidified food workshop set for Jan. 13-14 in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. –A workshop to train producers to satisfy requirements for selling acidified foods will take place Jan. 13-14 on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia.
This workshop will help participants understand basic food safety principles and comply with federal Food and Drug Administration requirements, said Andrew Clarke, MU food science professor.
Any producers adding value to products that are considered acidified need to attend such a workshop before they can sell their products, he said. The FDA definition of acidified foods includes low-acid foods to which acids or acid foods are added. Examples include fresh-packed pickles, peppers and marinated vegetables.
At the end of the workshop there will be a walk-through of the paperwork needed to file an acidified food process with the FDA. Participants completing the workshop will receive a certificate that they may use to verify the training for FDA and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services records.
Registration fee is $375 for the first person from a company and $300 for each additional person. Registration includes educational materials, lunches and a laboratory analysis of the pH and water activity for one product per participant. Registration is limited to 100. Deadline for registering is Dec. 30.
New or relatively inexperienced producers are welcome and reduced registration will be available for multiple representatives from a single company.

DAP's General Goods is owned by Pam. She is located in DeSoto, and can be reached by phone at 636.337.7026. She first started selling at the market in the 2009 season, and we're lucky to have such a great vendor. She sells baked goods, baking mixes, dog bones, dips, & jam. She likes to sell at our market because it's close to home and because we're all such friendly folks. When asked what makes the De Soto Farmers' Market Special, Pam said it's "...meeting local people and learning from others." We couldn't agree more, and we hope you'll visit Pam this weekend.

Apple Pie Contest

On October 23rd, the market will host the 2nd Annual Apple Pie Contest. Last year's winners are, I'm sure, already hard at work. Here's a bit about the contest and expectations for the event. If you have questions, please contact Darlene at St. Andrew's since she's the one that heads up the pie contest (586.2472).

Apple Pie Contest Rules

Pies must be delivered to De Soto Farmers’ Market between 8:00-9:00AM
Pies should be in a disposable pie plate
Contest is open to all.

There are three categories:

Junior Division ages: 5-17

Adult Division ages: 18-49

Senior Adult Division ages: 50+

Pies will be judged on Appearance, Taste and Consistency. All pies entered become property of the De Soto Farmers’ Market. (That sounds kind of sinister doesn't it, but there's a good reason.) The pies will then be sold for tasting by market visitors with the proceeds going to the market for next year's event. Winners will be announced on the main stage at the end of judging.

Judging Criteria

Appearance (1-10)

Pre-Slice:

Basic eye appeal. To what extent does the whole pie entice you to want to try it? Is the decoration creative and appetizing?

After Slice:

A single slice unveils the looks and consistency of the filling and crust. Pies should have generous, well distributed fruit as well as, good color and definition. The servibility of the pie will also be considered.

Taste & Texture – Crust (1-30) and Filling (1-30)

Crust & Filling:

The judges will evaluate two primary components of a pie – individually and then as a combined entity. These two components are the crust and the filling. They should first each stand on their own merits; and then blend together into a great combination. The judges will evaluate aspects of the crust first, then the filling. Here are some aspects they will consider:

Flavor:

Nice aroma.

Pleasant, uniform flavors. All ingredients taste fresh and are well balanced. A complimentary use of spices and seasonings that is not overpowering. Generally, crust has a pleasant, mild flavor that complements the filling. However, in some specialty pies, the crust may be used to help create flavor accents.

Mouth feel:

Smooth, uniform liquids, moderately viscous, with no chalky, gritty, pasty textures. Fruit should be well distributed, have good definition and be firm, but not overly crisp. Pastry crust should be flaky and melt in your mouth, should not be greasy or oily.

Crust Consistency:

Pastry crusts should be flaky and delicate, but not fall apart too easily. They should melt in your mouth with a mild, pleasant taste that complements the filling. They should be a light golden color, baked throughout and an even thickness across the side and bottom. The crimp should seal thoroughly all the way around the pie.

Aftertaste:

Generally, most crusts should have very subtle aftertastes. Aftertastes may vary widely in fillings, however, the important aspect of an aftertaste in pie tasting is whether it is unpleasant and for how long it lingers.

Overall Flavor/Taste (1-30)

This is the judges’ final chance to rate the pie overall. What makes a good pie? Here is a brief guideline for what traditional wisdom makes a good pie…

Crust:

Flaky, melt in your mouth consistency that has a mild, pleasant flavor and is baked evenly throughout to a light golden color. The crust should have a tight seal around the edges.

Filling:

Smooth uniform components with pleasant aroma and flavor which matches the advertised flavor, appealing color, and a nice aftertaste. Fruit used in quality pies should be well defined; good size, evenly distributed and have a firm, but not overly crisp, texture.

On October 23rd, the De Soto Farmers' Market will celebrate the end of another successful year and the close of our market season with Autumn Day. There will be an Apple Pie Contest and a Pumpkin Decorating Contest, and we'll get more details about those next week. (You'll need to go ahead and test your pie recipe this weekend if you want to have a chance to beat last year's winners.)

Next weekend will also be close enough to Halloween, that kids in costume will receive a free treat bag from the market. We'll be giving the bags out at the Market Master tent, so be sure to bring your hobgoblins, pumpkins, and ghosts along on the 23rd.

September 25th: Remembrance Day

Since plans changed unexpectedly on September 11th, we moved the free cake to this Saturday. Police Chief Ernie Paul will open the market by playing Reverie on the trumpet. He'll also close the market with Taps. There will be a brief ceremony at 10AM beginning with the Star Spangled Banner and then three speakers representing military and service personnel from our community. If you show up in uniform (and we mean service personnel; your band uniform doesn't count), then you'll be served a free piece of cake. De Soto Police, De Soto City & Rural Fire Departments, Valle & Joachim-Plattin Ambulance will have booths to hand out information about their community services. Please come and honor those who serve you.

Our band this weekend will be Sugar Moon, and they'll take the stage from 9-11 AM. We hope to see you there.

Farmer and Rancher Grant Writing Workshop

The De Soto Fall Festival is this Saturday. It will be held in Walther's Park and starts at 9 AM. However, the 5K run begins at 8 AM and registration will be at SMCI. The Mayor's Pancake Breakfast will begin at 7 AM and will be held at St. Andrew's. I heard that it will end at 9 AM, but I encourage you to come early. Remembrance Day

Saturday is September 11th, and there aren't many Americans that don't know exactly where they were when they heard about the terrorist attacks on that day in 2001. In an effort to honor those that died in the attacks, those that continue to fight to bring the attackers to justice, and those that did so much to rescue those trapped in the buildings that day, we wanted to have a short ceremony. However, with the tragic death of James Ide V, we thought it best to postpone the ceremony. We would still like for everyone to come by the market and take a moment to write any words of remembrance about September 11th on a large banner that we have. We will display the banner at the market on September 25th, which is also when we'll have the postponed ceremony.

The Kids' Corner activity is to make American flags, so your youngsters won't want to miss it. We'll also have pony rides!...now that the unbearable heat seems to be done, and we don't have to worry about heat exhaustion from riders or horses.

Come by the market, talk to neighbors about what you remember from September 11, 2001, and let's all remember together.

4-H Beginning Horsemanship Clinics

The Dreamcatcher's 4-H Club National Horse Bowl team is offering a ten hour, week long course, to introduce new riders to the basic techniques and theory involved in caring for, training, and riding horses.

Youth, ages 8-18, will have the opportunity to groom, lead and ride a horse. They will be taught basic safety in both working on the ground with their horse and when mounted. They will be introduced to theory which will cover horse anatomy, parts of tack, and basic management practices. Youth will also learn exercises which will prepare them to ride with a balanced seat.

Up to 18 youth will be divided into three groups so that each student gets a maximum amount of personalized instruction. The groups will rotate through a ground station, theory station and riding station at each meeting. Upon completion of the course students should be able to safely lead, groom, mount, dismount, and control their horse while riding in an arena. They will also be familiar with the parts of the horse, saddle, and bridle, and have a basic understanding of the management practices involved in owning and caring for a horse.

Students will be enrolled in 4-H as a part of participating in the course, which will enable them to access 4-H materials to continue their study in horsemanship. This clinic is designed to introduce your children to the joy of working with horses and encourage more families to take advantage of the wonderful opportunities 4-H offers.

Kelly Berger is the vendor behind Shenandoah Soaps. She's originally from De Soto but now lives in St. Louis. She'll be at the market this weekend selling handmade lye soap, lotion bars, handmade-crocheted washcloths, & handbags. Kelly is new to the market this year, but she's excited to be a part of our market. Her favorite part is seeing so many people that she knows and meeting the many new ones. Salmonella find links 2 Iowa farms to egg recall

(AP)-Investigators found salmonella in chicken feed at Wright County Egg that was used by that farm and also Hillandale Farms. Authorities also found additional samples of salmonella in other locations at Wright County Egg. More than 550 million eggs from the two farms were recalled this month after they were linked to salmonella poisoning in several states.

If the eggs you purchased recently were tainted or part of the massive egg recall, you might consider purchasing some eggs at the farmers' market!

Vendor Spotlight: Team Miller's Homestead Produce

Team Miller

This is Team Miller's second year to sell at the market, and you probably recognize Wendy, Jessica, Katheryn, Richard, and Casey by now. The kids are a great addition to the market and have done a lot of work to expand their products. They specialize in freshly baked breads and cookies but also sell produce such as asparagus, strawberries, tomatoes, and peppers. They also keep bees and sell local honey. Katheryn makes soaps and jewelry, and they often feature items such as painted rocks and plants.

They choose to come to the market almost every Saturday, and it's been a great way to teach the kids responsibility, discipline, forethought, and perserverence. Wendy homeschools the kids, and she never misses a good opportunity to throw in some entrepreneurship. Plus, you can't miss out on the friendly atmosphere at our market!

In the words of Wendy, the most rewarding part of the market is "getting to know the other vendors. They are incredible people!" Recipes have been swapped, and the Millers have learned a good deal about various skills just by chatting with other vendors and visitors to the market. It really shows their diligence since many vendors are just dog-tired at the end of the market season. There's so much to keep up with, and the Millers are involved in 4-H, the Jefferson County Beekeepers Association, and volunteer work with Meals on Wheels. It's amazing the things that the Millers get done, and they still do a great job of returning each week with a smile and good food.

September 4th: The market will be closed for the holiday. Woooooohooooooo! Isn't Labor Day grand?

September 11th: Remembrance Day, a special event where we'll try to honor the victims of September 11th, our military personnel, and local emergency management personnel. There will be free cake for people in uniform! (Don't confuse uniform with costume. We know some of you pranksters out there, and you don't get to eat cake...unless you happen to be a prankster who happens to be a fireman, cop, EMT, Sgt...)

September 18th: Fall Festival in De Soto. For a list of goings-on that day, please visit the Chamber's website. (Seriously, the Fall Festival 5K is the only 5K in Jefferson County that is relatively flat. Take advantage of it!)

Our music this weekend will be Larry Bay with his guitar, and the kids will have plenty of sidewalk chalk to cover the world! We won't tell if some adults want to use some as well; we know how much fun it is. The list of vendors this week is short. We've hit a bit of a lull while folks are taking stock of their remaining goods and gearing up for fall planting. (My lettuce beds need attention too!) However, we usually add some more vendors on Friday, so check back in the afternoon if there's someone specific you'd like to see.

Rams Pre-Season Opener

No, this isn't a review of the Ram's first "game" (although, I think we need to work on developing an offensive line that can carry the ball and protect our million dollar quarterback.) However, there were some vendors who made it to the game last week, and they were caught doing something scandalous! They didn't hold up signs about how great the De Soto Farmers' Market is and throw perfectly good tomatoes after lackluster calls, but they did get caught on the Kiss Cam. I was unable to track down a picture, but David and Elaine Carter were caught on the big screen. Below are the best photos we have of them, but I'll continue to try to find a ~~blackmail~~ photo of their memorable moment.

Last weekend's Tomato Fest was a well-attended event, and His Royal Highness, the Tomato King presided with dignity and...well, you be the judge from the photos...but I think there was a fair amount of diginity and grandeur!

The winners in the various categories were as follows:

Biggest Tomato topped the scales at 1.59 pounds, submitted by David Carter of Carter's Produce.

The Smallest Tomato, the size and shape of a jelly bean, was consumed by the Tomato King to verify that it was, in fact, a tomato after spectators were skeptical. Incidentally, no weight was obtained before it was consumed. It was submitted by Kim Mahoney.

Jillian Lutz submitted the tomato with the Most Outrageous Shape, a siamese-twin tomato with the halves joined at the stem.

The "Miss Congeniality"/Best Decorated category drew entries in both the adult and youth divisions. Sean Mahoney was praised for his originality with his winning entry of a spider formed from tomatoes, frosting, and paper clips. Gail Kniffen won the adult honors with her "Mr. Tomato Head" entry.

Tomatoes Everywhere This Saturday!

This weekend is Tomato Fest, and if you were blessed with rain that soaked (not the torrential downpour that knocked tomatoes off the vine), then you're just about ready for Saturday. Here are the specifics in case you need a recap:

His Highness, the Royal Tomato King will preside over two different competitions. First, there will be a Tomato Contest. You can enter tomatoes in four categories:
1. Biggest Tomato
2. Smallest Tomato
3. Most Outrageously Shaped Tomato
4. Miss Congeniality/Personality (for the best decorated tomato; watch that Bedazzler...it's rough on tomatoes)

Each category has an adult and youth division, so please bring your entries regardless of your age. The Biggest Tomato will be determined based on weight, and the other categories will be at the discretion of the Tomato King; may he be forever fair and just. Entries must be at the market by 8:30 AM.

The second contest that day will be a Vegetable Sculpture Competition. Using fruits and vegetables that can be grown in Missouri (no exotics please, and that means bananas and other things that don't grow here), construct a vegetable sculpture. There will be youth and adult divisions. Winners will be determined by the Tomato King, and entries must be at the market by 8:30 AM.

During the band's break at 10 AM, we'll announce the illustrious winners, and the Tomato King will bestow gifts or certificates on the winners.
